This class gives the beginning, intermediate, and anywhere in-between student the chance to create using the potter’s wheel. The two-hour meeting time allows for instruction, work, and clean up.  This six-week course will provide the time needed to explore basic, intermediate, and advanced wheel skills depending on each student’s abilities. Students will also learn glazing and firing techniques with a goal for each student to successfully complete several projects.

For beginners they will learn the basic skills to use the potter’s wheel as well as hand-building techniques. These skills will include:

  • Clay properties
  • Kiln use
  • Wedging clay
  • Reclaiming used clay
  • Build from a slab
  • Centering and coning
  • Opening the vessel
  • Pulling a thin wall and base
  • Shaping
  • Trimming a raised foot
  • Glazing

At the end of this 6 week class, students will be able to use the wheel to throw: a straight cylinder, a shaped cylinder, and a bowl. Students will be allowed 25 lbs. clay then able to purchase more if needed.
